Truck Work, Keep It Simple

Truck companies are tasked with a wide variety of jobs at a fire. All of which are essential to a successful outcome on the fireground. Yet many fire departments work with a limited number of truck companies on these incidents, or none at all. Truck work is about the skills, not the vehicle. Whether you operate with or without a Ladder Truck, truck work must be performed.

In this course, we will approach Truck work AGGRESSIVLEY. Our focus is VES! Come see what it’s really all about. This class will cover riding and tool assignments, the inside and outside team concepts, and essentials of truck work. Our instructors will bring you their “down and dirty” skills, which have been used over and over again in the real world. By the end of the day, students will force doors, perform searches, remove victims, and control fire using a water can, all which are truck company essentials. Everyone wants to talk about THEM first. The responsibility belongs to all of us. SO DON’T SCREW IT UP!

Reported Occupants Trapped

These words from the dispatcher change it all. The actions of first due companies at a structural fire can make or break an incident. Life safety concerns should always be our priority when first due fire ground tactics are being initiated. Until the structure is searched, there is no certainty that civilians aren’t present. Making split second decisions and performing critical tasks with low staffing could make the difference between life or death. This requires quick actions upon arrival to locate and eventually remove civilians from the structure. When push comes to shove, all the citizen really wants us to do is to save them and their loved ones. There is no room for error; there is only a short window of opportunity to save a life.

The point of this course is to have firefighters occupying interior spaces where the highest percentages of victims are found within the first 5 minutes of arrival. This is often done when fire conditions are NOT favorable. Our jobs are dangerous, but that’s what we signed up for. You swore to put your life on the line for someone else, even people you’ve never met. This responsibility belongs to all of us, SO DON’T SCREW IT UP!

The Outside Vent Position

The outside vent (OV) firefighter is often an underused or unassigned position in small town and/or understaffed departments. To some, the OV is considered a freelance position, which couldn’t be further from the truth. The benefits this position provides has a very large impact on incident mitigation, regardless of the apparatus type they arrive on.

In this course, we will discuss the roles and responsibilities of the OV operating at single & multi-family dwellings, and how this position impacts the fire ground by performing searches and supporting fire attack. We will address the components of a search size-up, VES, and what clues help us understand interior conditions. Our focus for this class is to build firefighter confidence, while enhancing basic skills through fire ground experiences. Let’s take a look at how this position can change the way your FD operates, making fire ground operations more efficient and effective.
